Part of the open concept of the apartment was a breakfast bar that separated the small kitchen from the living space. She set the plates on that, giving him the chance to step around and unpack the cannolis, while she got the coffee started.

"Oh? You can tell I'm a nature girl already?" She was partial to natural beauty over man-made. It came from the hours upon hours she spent camping and hiking with her father growing up. It permeated all aspects of her life - from her choices in furniture and accommodations to the fact that she wore very little makeup, if any.

She popped a filter into the coffee pot, measured out the grounds, then filled the reservoir with water before tapping the 'on' button. The maker started its typical clicking and popping. The mugs were conveniently in the cabinet under the bar, so she turned in his direction and knelt down to get two for them.

"Are you a night owl like me?"
