Reunited and it feels so... awkward - for mybroisadopted

It was the last place Jane had expected to run into Thor. She wasn't sure what had made her send him those hearts. After waiting for so long the only explanation possible was that her patience had simply run out. He had promised to come back for her, yet he hadn't. She thought she had feelings for him, but her logical side kept telling her that she had only known him for a day and a half, there was no possible way she could know him well enough to fall for him that quickly. Her heart and her brain were still at war when he arrived.

She opened the door to her New York apartment and ushered him in. The shoebox of a place seemed even smaller with him in it. "So... hi."

Thor stepped back from the massive metal beast that roared into the underground location they were in. It was like the smaller version that had hit him - twice! - in his adventure as a mortal man. He eyed it warily. "What manner of beast is this?" He rumbled.

She held tightly to his arm to reassure him that he was in no danger.

"It's a train. A subway train. It runs on tracks that go underground. It will take us to our destination much faster than if we tried to travel by car. This way there are no lights to stop at and no traffic to worry about." She tugged him back a little so that people exiting the train would have room.

"We let the people off, then we get on. When we get to the station we want, we get off. Just like riding a horse, only it's a machine."

"Such strange contraptions mortals create to fuel their world," Thor said, but he smiled nonetheless. "You have so many forms of transportation, as if one or two could not be sufficent! Endlessly complicated!"

But he looked actually excited to try this metal beast called a train; all new Midgardian experiences tended to interest him so. Such a vastly different world and one, after perhaps being forced to learn so, he wanted to learn more of as its protector.

He walked inside and studied the length of it with a quick look up and down the car, allowing Jane to guide them to a pair of seats. Of course his eyes would alight on an old woman who was clearly homeless, sitting bundled up at the end of the car.

Jane only took the seats because there were plenty to go around. When the trains were crowded she preferred to leave them to those who needed them most.

"You can't tell right now, but we keep coming up with new ones because the old ones get crowded. There are so many people living in one small space that mass transit is a necessity. Not to mention how impatient everyone is to get where they're going. No time to walk from place to place." She smiled and kept ahold of his arm even though they were seated. She followed his gaze to the homeless woman, a sadly common sight in the city.

"We'll talk about that later," she whispered, not wanting to offend the woman by talking about her as if she weren't there. The train began to move, and Jane watched Thor closely to see his reaction.

Despite not being of Midgard, he was not blind to the state of this woman. The layers of clothing, the ragged hair, the face heavy in wrinkles and age. How could an elder of these people be treated as such? It took only a few moments for him to make up his mind. "Excuse me, my Lady," he said quietly and stood, grabbing the rail at the top of the train car easily to move across.

He moved across to her, and knelt down beside the seat. He spoke too softly for anyone else to hear, though the few people in the car glanced at him as he walked past. Suddenly he reached into his pocket and drew something out of it, taking her hand and placing it into it. He flashed one of those brilliant smiles of his before he stood.

The old, homeless woman took his hand again and said something to him, looking up with her eyes shining, before he nodded.

He was beaming as he returned to Jane's side and sat beside her again as the train came to a stop.

Jane watched as he spoke to the homeless woman, very conscious of the fact that everyone else was looking at him too. It was an unspoken rule that the homeless were not spoken to - their presence was simply tolerated. As soon as he was back at her side she leaned in.

"What did you give to her? What did you say?" They had several more stops to go, and once those departing at the station had gotten off, and more had gotten on, the train moved once again.

"I told her that she was beautiful," Thor said honestly, raising his brows, "and that elders should not be so alone on a day like today. I gave her a way to receive money with a piece of gold."

Jane's eyes grew wide. It was sweet of him, and she liked what it said of his personality and his heart, but he couldn't go around dispensing alien coins to whomever he wished.

"Gold? Asgardian gold?" She looked over at the woman, who had already pocketed what had been in her hand and was looking at Jane as if deciding the easiest way to replace her.

"Thor, that was very sweet, but you can't do things like that here. It's more complicated."

Thor frowned at Jane's displeasure and her reaction. "I do not understand. She is clearly in need, why would I not aid her while I am able? ...Should I have used Midgardian currency?"

Jane nodded enthusiastically. "Even then, you can't be sure what she'll use the money for. If you really want to help someone, it would be better to give them food or clothing, things they really need, instead of money they could waste on alcohol or drugs." It was a sad truth, but it was the reality, especially in New York.

"I do not understand," Thor said with a frown. "Why would you not wish her to purchase medicines if she requires them?" A completely different viewpoint on the term 'drugs'. The talking box - 'television' - had informed him about the concept of drugs being medicine with the strange breaks between shows.

"That's not what I meant." Jane was not known for having an abundance of patience. Thor was certainly going to try what she had in the following hours.

"Sometimes people take things they don't need to just to feel good. Feel better than good, even. They use it as an escape so that they don't have to face reality." That was the best she could do - how could she explain the concept of 'getting high'?

The trained stopped again and she smiled. "Come on, this is our stop."

Thor stood up, offering his hand to his lady, even as he asked, "what is wrong with allowing someone to peruse happiness how they deem worthy? Does it harm others?" He wanted to understand and tried. It required a number of questions sometimes, which indeed was going to endlessly tax Jane's patience.

At times his curiosity was amusing and adorable, like watching a kitten explore a ball of yarn. Other times, Jane's patience wore thin. She couldn't fault him, though, considering all there was to learn.

"For starters, it's against the law. And it breeds crime. And those drugs can have really bad side effects, she could be slowly killing herself with them and just not care." He did have an interesting perspective on the subject, though. What was the harm in letting someone destroy themselves if that's what they wanted and it didn't impact anyone else?

She led the way up the stairs and back out into the sunshine. The zoo was just across the street and into the park. She blinked against the sun as she pulled her sunglasses from her purse.

Thor turned this all over in his mind, then had to agree, "if it produces more crime, then that is a highly negative effect." Yet he had no issue with the whole concept as there were those in Asgard who did much the same.

He walked tall and strong at Jane's side, putting the subject from his mind and the smile returning to his face as he looked over the entrance to the park. Midgard fascinated him, in all of it's strange ways. How a people could be so very oblivious to the world around them.

His posture was so perfect she felt the need to stand up straighter. She took his hand and held it tightly in the hopes he would realize that meant that they needed to stop and wait for the light to change before crossing the street. She remembered the way he had walked down the street, cars honking at him, not caring. She really hoped he had learned about how streets worked by then.

"It can have a really negative effect. Plus, people get addicted to the drugs but don't have the money to buy them, so they steal and rob people to get more." She slid her sunglasses on with her free hand just as the light changed and the walk signal lit up. She hardly needed to lead the way - the entire crowd started to move.

"I'm really glad you're here," she said with a crooked grin, looking sideways and up in his direction.

He had learned a significant amount simply by being with her, and now the Avengers teaching him as he remains with them until his return to Asgard. Her arm with his did keep him from doing exactly as he would have in the past, however.

"That breeds more sense. If they initiate further crimes against others, then it becomes the greater problem of the whole than one person's choice." Understanding, now, in as much of a sense as one could with the provided information on a difficult subject for the world.

However, his seriousness faded at her smile, and he returned it. "I am glad to be with you, wherever that might be."

Jane's cheeks flushed pink at his compliment. She was so wrapped up in looking at him that she nearly walked into a woman who had stopped ahead of her. She managed to swerve to the side just in time - right into Thor's side.

"Oh! Sorry." The incident only made her blush more. She wondered if she would evers top acting like a lovestruck teenager around him.

"Be careful, my lady," Thor said warmly, smiling softly as he brought his arm around her, keeping her close. He looked back forward as they went into the park, and he studied it all with a curious expression. "You are limited to only this area of greenery in this city?"

Jane opened her mouth to correct him for calling her 'my lady' again, but then changed her mind. He was who he was, she was not going to be able to change that. A large part of her did not want to change it - he was chivalrous and it made her feel warm and protected and cared about. She lengthened her strides so they could walk with their arms around one another.

"This is the biggest park, but there are others. It's much bigger than most people realize." They turned to walk into the park. The sidewalk was crowded, as it tended to be when the weather was nice, but they had no trouble navigating. A path naturally seemed to open up wherever Thor went. Jane attributed it to his size.

People also tended to stare, which considering he looked like a Chippendales dancer wasn't exactly a surprise. If Thor even noticed, he made no sign as he smiled and watched where they were going. "The miniature canines are a strange beast. They are the size of a rodent, yet they seem exceedingly popular," he commented as they walked, watching a Chihuahua as it padded past.

Jane laughed at his comment, in complete agreement with him. "You should see the ones that are so small they're called 'teacup'. Women carry them around in their purses. It's ridiculous." Jane's idea of a dog was a golden retriever or a lab.

"Do you have dogs where you're from? Did you have any as pets when you were little?"

Thor nodded, and a smile came to his lips. "Yes, we have canines of a similar look- though to the larger breeds, not the rodent-dogs of the Midgardian fancy ladies. They are much larger in size and are used for protection and hunting and are very loyal beasts. There are many that roam the grounds, and they were excellent company. Likewise, there are many felines that keep the grounds free of rodents."

(ooc: Would you be terribly offended if I borrowed from the comics that he can talk to animals? Because it's just something so weird of Thor that I totally fell in love with it. XD)

"Sounds like our dogs might be descended from yours. Geneticists said it was wolves, but who knows, it could be a mix of wolves and your dogs that made the ones here now." They continued down the sidewalk toward the zoo, Jane's dainty hand firmly in his, and she was blissfully oblivious to everyone around them.

"I am not sure one our canines would come to Midgard, unless it happened to be brought here by one of us.." Thor's expression turned thoughtful, his hand gently wrapped around hers. "Perhaps that is possible!" Forever an optimist. "They are very talkative beasts."
