[Sokka has been studying this broken, half Pok&ecaute; ball for weeks and still the whole structure of it had been eluding him. So clearly he needs a change of scenery in order to find inspiration somewhere else. So instead of sitting inside of his room all day surrounded by papers and notes and dim light, he's now outside by the fountain, sitting outside in the sunlight. He's still got a notepad—filled with scribbles and random notes—and a pen to figure things out.

However, there's a frustrated look on his face. Clearly the change of venue isn't giving him luck either. He slaps the notepad against the edge of the fountain and kicks some dust.]

[The smack of the notepad catches Jane's attention. She looks up from her own notes to see a very frustrated guy a few feet down from her. She can compltely relate, considering her own notebook is filled with entries that she's scribbled out or revised so many times she can barely read them any more.]

Um... hi.

[Boy that was awkward. Good job, Jane.]

[Sokka has been so focused on trying to figure out how this accursed Poké ball worked that he hasn't even noticed that anyone else was present. He certainly is lost in his world until Jane finally offers a hello, and Sokka jumps a little bit.

Thankfully, he doesn't notice the awkwardness at all because of that.]

Oh, uh, hi! I hadn't noticed you there. [He unconsciously gestures to his notebook, as if it explained everything there was to know.] I don't think I've seen you around here yet. The name's Sokka.

[He holds out an hand, offering to shake hers.]

[Jane, when not completely self-obsessed, can be pretty nosy. The notations in his book were complex and she found where they could be leading very interesting.]

Hi Sokka, I'm Jane Foster. I'm judging from your notes that you're a scientist? What are you working on?

[Sokka... is a good deal many things. Scientist is, really, at best number three or four on the list of many things that is. So it's really not the best description of Sokka, but...]

Of course! Well, among other things. Scientist, engineer, inventor... among other things.

But this... this is downright infuriating!

[He shows her a hollowed-out hemisphere, white in color and a little bit rusted. It's a little bit larger than a thimble. At first glance it doesn't look special at all.]

One of the kids with the Pokémon animals—Ash was his name—let me borrow this after I said I'd try to figure it out how it worked. Apparently one of his friend's Poké balls broke, and the animal is trapped inside. So I said I'd try to figure out how the things actually worked.

But it breaks all the rules I know! As far as I can tell, it's just a piece of rusted metal!

[Jane takes a closer look at the tiny ball. It looks incredibly ordinary, but what he is describing is anything but. How could there possibly be an animal inside the small object? There had to be magic involved, like the kind Jane had seen on Asgard but not gotten the chance to analyze.]

Ok, I'll admit that I have no idea what a Pokemon animal is, or how this thing is supposed to work. Can you tell me more?

[He was totally getting there.]

Well, these Pokémon are these animal things that can do these pretty crazy attacks. Apparently the people from that world use these guys to duel and battle one another. But that's... that's not important.

[He points to the little sphere now.]

These things, or at least, if they're not just broken like this, are what hold 'em. This is just half of one; the top is red and has a little button on the front. When you press it, out comes your Pokémon. I guess it's like teleportation or something similar.

But what's weird is that each Ball can only hold one creature... and it is specifically paired with a specific creature. If you catch it with it, then no other creature can go in it. And that creature can't go in any Ball unless you let it go.

I don't want to call it magic. It seems to technological to call magic. But it just doesn't make sense.

Jane listened and absorbed the information that he'd shared. None of it made any sense, but she gave him the benefit of the doubt. After all, this was from a different world, and she'd learned first hand that things that were impossible in one world could be commonplace in another.

"Do we know where the other half is?" she asked. If the problem was the inability to retrieve the creature, the obvious solution to her would be to reunite the ball with it's other half.

Sokka sighs a bit and shakes his head. Of course that's where it gets tricky. "I don't think we have it here. Or at least, not that I'm aware of. I didn't actually ask where the other half was. I figured if it were here, he'd have probably offered to give it to me or at least tell me where to find it. But at the very least, this half is something like a keepsake to him from... something."

Sokka sets the sphere down and picks up his notepad. "And that's why the problem is so hard. There's nothing to actually experiment on. All of the other Poké Balls are too fragile since messing them up risks the animal it's attached to. And Ash wants this back in one piece, which means I really can't tear into it to see if there's something inside. Everything is just guesswork. I think I'm about at the limit of what I know how to do."

Jane took a look at his notes, then thought for a moment. If the completed sphere actually worked as he postulated, then their work could intersect. It was only logical that her theories on interstellar travel could correspond to teleportation of an animal.

"I would think the first thing we need to do is see if it's still emitting any sort of energy. If so, and the other half is anywhere in Luceti, I might be able to put together something that can read that energy. Like a metal detector, but for this thing specifically. If we can't find the other half, well, I think the only thing to do is to try to make one ourselves."

The difference between Sokka's attitude before Jane's idea and afterward is like night and day. Where defeat used to be, suddenly there is hope and inspiration. There's an excitement and a twinkle in his eyes just thinking about the possibilities of actually reconstructing a Poké Ball. That wasn't an avenue he had even dared think of this entire time. That, plus the fact that she seems to have an idea for how this thing actually could work, brings Sokka to the beginnings of a plan.

"Now there's an idea!" he says to Jane with enthusiasm. "And you're an absolute genius for even thinking about it! I mean, I don't know if I have all the details necessary to construct one, but I think you might be onto something with the energy pattern. There's definitely a bright light that gets emitted when the animals come out. And if we can figure out how to imbue the energy in the metal, I work over at the smithy; I might be able to physically make it!"

"I'll double check with Ash to make sure it's not actually here, but I wouldn't count on it. But making one... that's pure genius!"

That at least gets them to the point of understanding how they might repair one!

His enthusiasm is contagious. Jane's rather proud of herself for coming up with the ideas. Their attempts might end up failing completely, but they at least had somewhere to go.

"So we have a plan. Why don't we meet back here after you've talked to Ash and then we'll figure out what we're going to do next."

[Action - Fountain]

[OOC: For what it's worth, I actually know that he doesn't have the other half. So depending upon how you want to do it, we can either handwave that... wait... or whatever!]

"I am already on the case! Leave it to Sokka to track this one down!" Sokka cries out as he jumps up, ready to take on the world or anything else. Even better was that he had an equally excited partner-in-crime to dabble in this project with. That's the best thing to be excited about.

And with that Sokka starts walking off... except... he pauses before looking back to Jane with a rather markedly sheepish expression. He grins pretty widely, feeling rather silly all of a sudden. "Well, I would... except... what's the best way to find you once I find out. Journal? Or should I just drop in on you at your favorite haunt?" After all, that would be important since, after all, he's just met her. He doesn't know much about her other than that she certainly speaks science.

Jane completely understands the single-mindedness of enthusiasm and discovery, so she doesn't hold it against him when he starts walking away without saying goodbye. That he does manage to stop and turn around is appreciated, though.

"Journal's fine. Then we'll find a good place and time to meet up and do what comes next."

"Sounds like a plan! I'll let you know how it goes. I'll see you around, Jane."

He gives her a wave before bounding off, ready to get to work.
